Letters, including one dated 1903 Sept. 9, from Thomas H. Smith, chancellor of the (Ala.) Southwestern Chancery Division in Mobile, Ala., to William Clarence Jones in Montgomery, Ala. Discusses an introduced bill that would allow an Inferior Criminal Court judge to receive a larger yearly salary. He suggests the bill be amended to include payment of travel expenses of the Supernumerary judge. A letter, 1903 Sept. 12, from Smith to Jones, further discusses the issue. A third letter, 1903 Sept. 26, from E.N. and P.E. Jones, lawyers, in Camden, Ala., to W.C. Jones in Montgomery, discusses Fortune Williams, a "colored man," who failed the teacher's licensing examination.

William Clarence Jones was born on 1845 Nov. 9 at Oakhill, Wilcox Co., Ala. He attended the University of Ala., 1863-1864, but left school to join the Third Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War. He received a law degree from Cumberland University, Columbia, Tenn. in 1871. He taught school in Wilcox Co., Ala. for 15 years, and then practised law in Camden, Ala. He was elected to State senate from the 22nd District in 1902. Jones died on 1920 Feb. 3. From the description of Letters, 19...
